Dr. Steven S. Shaw
Dentist/Owner
Dr. Steven S. Shaw obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine and earned his dental degree from Southern Illinois University, School of Dental Medicine. He is a Maine native and grew up here in Portland. He served as an officer in the United States Navy from 1998 until 2012. Dr. Shaw was stationed in Kuwait and Bahrain with assignments in Europe and the United States. Dr. Shaw has 25 years of experience in the dental field working in practices in Maine and Massachusetts in addition to the United States Navy. He has vast experience in cosmetic dentistry and has also furthered his dental education at Columbia University in the field of Implant Dentistry. He is a certified Invisalign provider. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Maine Dental Association and the Greater Portland Dental Association.
Dr. Hayley Hibbard
Associate Dentist
Dr. Hibbard graduated from the University of New England College of Dental Medicine, where she was inducted into Omnicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society and was awarded the Outstanding Student Award. Prior to dental school, she received her B.S. in Health Sciences from Stonehill College, followed by her MPH from Simmons University in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Hibbard strives to provide each patient with a positive experience that caters to their individual needs.
When not doing dentistry, she enjoys spending time at the beach, trying out new local restaurants, playing pickleball, golfing and walks around Back Cove with her dog Boomer.
Dr. Audra Boynton
Associate Dentist
Dr. Audra Boynton is a native Mainer living in Portland. She is thrilled to be part of Back Cove Dental. Dr. Boynton received a BS in Biotechnology from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York and a BS in Dental Hygiene at the University of New England prior to returning to the University of New England to complete her Doctor of Dental Medicine. Dr. Boynton lends her passion for prevention and education to her eight years spent as a dental hygienist. This time was invaluable in shaping her career as a dentist. Dr. Boynton keeps up to date on her field through the continuing education program, the Casco Bay Study Club. Dr. Boynton is also an adjunct clinical faculty at UNE and enjoys helping students fall in love with dentistry. Outside of dentistry, Dr. Boynton loves to spend time in nature with her husband and dog. She is an avid equestrian, gardener, chef, bowler, and even has her recreational lobstering license.
Megan
Hygiene/Clinical Director
Megan has a BS in Human Biology from USM and a BS in Dental Hygiene from UNE. She is a Maine native who loves to cater to her patient’s individual hygiene needs ensuring their optimal oral health. She really enjoys helping our patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their visit. As a passionate advocate for oral health and a committed dental professional, she brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our office and ensures the standard of care and performance for preventative, re-care and periodontal therapy performed by hygienists is met. She has an adventurous spirit and you will often listen to her tell stories about hiking, skiing and exploring the great outdoors.
Hannah
Hygienist
Hannah is a Maine native born and raised in Windham, Maine. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of New England. Serving our patients with warm hospitality and working with a team that strives to deliver excellent dental care through integrity and compassion is her favorite thing about working here. Hannah loves building relationships with her patients and helping them achieve their individual dental goals. She lives in Scarborough with her family and pet dog Hank, a pug puppy who takes up most of her free time!
Amanda
Hygienist
Amanda graduated from the University of New England in 2009 with a B.S. in Dental Hygiene. In 2013, in addition to working in private practice, she began working as an adjunct clinical instructor in the dental hygiene department at UNE. Over the past decade, Amanda has continued to practice clinically while adding to her teaching schedule. Currently enrolled in a MSEd program at UNE, she continues to pursue her love for working with students in higher education. Amanda lives in Scarborough with her dog, Bodhi and three toddlers. When she finds free time, Amanda enjoys hiking, paddle boarding and yoga.
Lauren
Hygienist
Lauren originally from New Hampshire, has been a proud Maine resident since 2020, where she lives with her cat, Leo. She holds an undergraduate degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of New England, a Masters degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Bridgeport, and a Nursing Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Currently Lauren is a full-time Assistant Clinical Professor of Dental Hygiene at the University of New England. She also enjoys working at Back Cove Dental where you will find her one to two days a week. “I’m extremely proud to be part of an incredible dental practice. As a team, we always strive to provide a warm, inviting atmosphere for our patients.” Outside of work, Lauren loves hiking, baking and travelling. Katherine
Office Manager
Katherine has been an office manager since 2008. She has a Bachelors of Science in Engineering from Loughborough University, U.K. and an MSc in Management from Birmingham University, U.K. She has worked in many organizations during her career, ranging from tourism organizations to the Olympics and in a variety of roles from managerial/consulting to crowd management services. At Back Cove Dental, Katherine oversees the implementation of office policies & procedures and is responsible for budgeting and personnel organization. As part of the office team, she also provides support to all aspects of the business. Katherine is of British & Greek origin and has spent most of her life in Athens, Greece until she moved to Portland, Maine. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and travelling as much as she can.
Meghan
Front Office Manager
Meghan has been in the dental field for over 14 years and in our office for over 11 years. She contributes to all aspects of the business, from greeting patients to patient/staff scheduling, allowing us to provide the best possible care to each patient. Responsible for all administrative parts of the office from organizing and updating patient records, to patient treatment planning, she is also our insurance specialist, overseeing claims handling and resolution. She lives with her family and a wide array of pets in Standish and enjoys spending time in the country. She loves to travel, garden, and enjoy the great outdoor activities Maine has to offer.
Katherine
Front Desk Coordinator
Katherine is our friendly face in our busy front desk. She enjoys working closely with her colleagues, Meghan and Magen, and is happy to answer all patient questions relating to insurance, accounts or new patient registration. Katherine has been in the dental administration field for several years now and comes from a strong background in customer services having previously worked in the aviation field for many years. Over the years, she has proven to be a consummate professional in all aspects of her job and an invaluable team member. She lives in Saco with her family and pets, a cat named Charming, a rabbit named Ned and a dachshund named Oscar. In her free time she loves going on short trips around her native Maine and enjoys outdoor sports.
Magen
Dental Assistant – Front Desk Associate
Magen is a dedicated dental assistant and front desk associate with a background in behavioral health sciences. She performs an array of administrative duties for our front desk, in addition to providing support in preparing equipment for use and helping our dentists and dental hygienists care for our patients. ”I enjoy creating a welcoming environment for patients while supporting their unique and personal dental care needs. Outside of work, I love spending time in my town of Naples and being outdoors with my husband and son Weston. My favorite moments are those shared with my son, exploring together, and creating lasting memories. I believe in the beauty of simple joys and the importance of family.”
Madisyn
Dental Assistant
Madisyn is the latest addition to the Back Cove Dental family. Having graduated from a Dental Assistant Program, she works side-by-side with the dentists to provide patients with comfortable, high quality dental care. Her gentle touch and sweet demeanor surely help to put our patients at ease! When she is not working hard in the clinic, Madisyn enjoys spending time with her family, friends and pets. She loves the outdoors and everything Maine has to offer and her hobbies are reading and cooking.
